Swedish Lucia Candle Crown Display Museum Plinth

by Martin Snider

Soft tungsten lamplight glows against the white wax of a traditional Lucia crown resting on a neutral museum plinth in Ashkelon. Twelve slender beeswax candles stand upright in a ring of green holly, their flames absent but their presence felt through the polished gold wire spiraling through the leaves. The early spring season is hinted at by the fresh, deep green of the holly leaves against the pale, smooth surface of the display base. Small, sharp highlights catch on the metallic wire and the rounded tips of the unlit candles, creating a quiet rhythm of light. Negative space surrounds the arrangement, isolating the vibrant greenery and white fabric sash that drapes over the edge of the plinth. One shadow falls softly to the right, at the base of the delicate structure in the stillness of the midnight hour.
