Surreal Planet Rings Over Subway Door in inside a restored train terminal in Eastern Market, Washington DC

Surreal Planet Rings Over Subway Door

by Laila Buckley

Pale midday light floods the restored Eastern Market terminal, bouncing off walls painted in soft cream tones. A subway door blurs into a streak of silver and gray as it closes, trapping indistinct passenger shapes inside the glass. The motion creates a smear of color against the rigid architecture. Above the train tracks, a massive planet with distinct, glowing rings hangs low on the horizon, defying the indoor sky. The celestial body casts a faint, cool shadow across the polished floor tiles. Dust motes float in the beams of window light, illuminating the strange juxtaposition of urban transit and cosmic geometry. A sharp edge of the door frame cuts through the blur, at the base of the impossible sphere in the station's concrete reality.
