Surreal Marching Band in Kinshasa Blue Hour in at a festival street procession in Kinshasa

Surreal Marching Band in Kinshasa Blue Hour

by Joann Parrish

Deep indigo twilight washes over a symmetrical street procession in Kinshasa, where a marching band turns a sharp corner. Brass instruments gleam under the fading natural light, against the distant orange glow of the town horizon. The dry season air leaves the air clear and crisp. Every uniform detail is sharp, from the fabric folds to the polished metal. A haunting impossibility defines the scene: long, dark shadows stretch backward from the musicians, pointing directly toward the fading light source on the horizon instead of away from it. These reversed shadows cut across the pavement, intersecting with the real light in a geometric contradiction. The final image rests on the sharp edge where the shadow tip meets the band's own boot.
