Surreal Koi Balloon Over Foam Lace Atrium
by Jean Bernal
Bright midmorning light floods a vaulted atrium near Nampula, bouncing off pale walls to illuminate dark sand scattered with intricate white foam lace. A giant koi fish hangs suspended from the high ceiling like a living parade balloon, its orange and white scales rendered with solid, matter-of-fact presence against the architectural space. Soft reflections shimmer on the smooth nearby surfaces where the foam meets the ground. The turn of seasons is visible in the specific texture of the drying sand and the play of light across the vaulted arches. The impossible fish remains perfectly still, its position anchored in the air above the organic patterns of the retreating wave residue. Shadows from the fish fall sharply across the foam, at the base of the surreal element in the concrete reality of the indoor space.
