Koi Balloon Over Textile Booth in Setif Temple
by Cora Snyder
Soft, diffused afternoon light falls through the ceremonial alcove near Setif, illuminating a heritage textile booth draped in woven fabrics of indigo, rust, and ochre. Early spring shadows stretch quietly along the stone walls, highlighting the rough texture of the masonry and the smooth sheen of the hanging silks. A frame-within-a-frame archway encloses the vendor's stall, where folded bolts of cloth rest on wooden shelves. Dominating the space above, a giant koi fish floats suspended like a living parade balloon, its scales rendered in metallic orange and white, casting a subtle, impossible reflection on the wet stone floor. The fish's movement is frozen, hovering motionless against the muted gray sky visible through the arch. one drop of rainwater rests on the edge of the lowest textile fold, catching the light.
