Surreal Bath Bazaar with Inverted Shadows

by Ida Mitchell

Copper and terracotta pottery jars line the narrow stone walls of a Bath alleyway, glowing under the crisp high-altitude light of late summer. Hanging lanterns dangle from rough timber beams, casting pools of warm amber against the cool grey limestone. Dramatic clouds swirl above the tight framing, suggesting a storm that has not yet arrived. The most striking feature defies physics: dark shadows from every jar and lamp stretch upward and backward, pointing directly toward the bright sky where the sun hangs. Dust motes hang suspended in the air, untouched by gravity or wind. The texture of the rough clay contrasts sharply with the smooth, impossible geometry of the shadows that seem to pull the eye upward against the natural flow of light. One crack in a pottery rim catches the inverted shadow line.
