Sunlight Prism Refraction on White Paper in inside a vaulted atrium near Venice

Sunlight Prism Refraction on White Paper

by Hector Satterfield

Late afternoon light falls through sheer curtains into a vaulted atrium near Venice, illuminating a triangular prism resting on a sheet of white paper. The glass object fractures the sunlight into a spectrum of warm orange, yellow, and soft violet that spreads across the textured surface. Deep shadows pool in the high architectural corners, against the bright, graphic bands of color. The paper remains pristine except where the refracted beam touches it, creating sharp edges of light against the matte white background. A faint reflection of the curtain folds appears on the polished stone floor nearby. The prism casts a distinct dark shadow that anchors the floating colors to the surface.
