Sun Flare Through Blinds Havana Evening

by Astrid Hatch

Honeyed evening light spills through a narrow gap in weathered wooden venetian blinds, fracturing into a sharp, diagonal burst of white and gold. Dust motes hang suspended in the low air, catching the firelight warmth that washes over the slats. Above, fast-moving cloud bands streak across a deepening blue sky, their undersides shadowed in gray. The dry season air hangs thick with particulate matter, visible only where the sunbeam cuts through the gloom. Shadows stretch long across the textured surface below, showing the tension of the diagonal light. At the edge rests the rough, splintered edge of a blind slat catching the brightest point of the flare.
