Students Crossing Campus With Violin Cases in Sleet

Late morning light falls through the canopy of mature trees, dappling a wet, dark campus courtyard near San Diego. Three students navigate the slick pavement, their dark clothing against the pale, driving sleet. Each carries a hard violin case against their hip and a paper coffee cup in a gloved hand. Fine white chalk dust coats the edges of a nearby bench and the lower steps of a brick building, settling on the damp surfaces. The students maintain a steady, focused pace, heads slightly lowered against the falling precipitation. Their movement creates a rhythm across the wet stones, while the chalk marks remain distinct against the dark, rain-washed masonry.
