Dusk settles over a Merida street corner where a vendor manages a cluttered fruit stand under a corrugated tin awning, the gray light softened by a fine, persistent rain that beads on the plastic sheeting and slicks the concrete pavement. A stack of faded blue plastic crates holds bright yellow mangoes and red chilies, their colors popping against the wet, dark ground. A customer in a soaked raincoat leans in, pointing at a selection, while the vendor, wearing a faded yellow shirt, reaches for a scale with one hand and holds a dripping umbrella with the other.
