Arranging Fruit in Merida

by Wendy Barlow

A street vendor in Merida’s historic center stands behind a worn wooden cart under the flat, diffuse light of an overcast midday. The cart’s surface is cluttered with the tools of his trade: a metal grater for fresh cheese, a simple cheese board, and a muffin tin repurposed to hold small portions of fruit. A window box with vibrant red geraniums hangs from a nearby balcony, adding a splash of color against the white stucco facade. The vendor’s hands move with practiced efficiency, using a dibber to arrange items in the tin. Paint flecks on a drawer pull hint at years of use, while pebbles pressed into wet mud on the sidewalk edge suggest recent rain.
