Stairwell Landing in Vancouver

A damp concrete stairwell in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighborhood glows with the cool, diffuse light of early morning. A rusted metal railing curves along the left, leading the eye to a narrow landing where a faded blue towel hangs from a corroded hook, its edge slightly frayed. Below, a cluster of potted geraniums in chipped terracotta pots spills over the landing’s edge, their red blooms stark against the gray rain-slicked pavement. A pair of beaded sandals sits abandoned near the doorframe, next to a dented coffee tin that has been repurposed as a makeshift planter for a trailing vine.
