Evening Light on Slippers
by Leah Ochoa
A narrow Montreal laneway glows under the amber spill of a streetlamp, where a weathered brick wall meets a patch of damp asphalt near a rusted fire escape. In the immediate foreground, a pair of worn leather slippers sits abandoned beside a small wooden crate, their texture contrasting sharply with the rough, peeling paint of the building's base. The scene is anchored by the deep red of a local bakery sign reflecting off a puddle, at the base of the composition in the specific urban fabric of the Plateau neighborhood. A Cairn Terrier pauses mid-stride, its fur catching the rim light as it sniffs at a discarded recipe card fluttering against the curb.
