The cool stillness before sunrise settles over a wet Vancouver street corner near Gastown, where the cobblestones reflect the amber glow of vintage gas lamps. A lone pedestrian in a dark waterproof jacket pauses at a bus stop, holding a brushed steel thermos to ward off the chill. Steam rises faintly from the lid, mingling with the mist drifting off the distant harbor. The sky is a deep indigo, just beginning to lighten above the silhouettes of the North Shore mountains.
