A stainless steel thermos sits on a frosted window sill inside a Chicago apartment, catching the first pale light of just after sunrise. Condensation beads rest on the cold metal surface, reflecting the gray winter sky visible through the frost-covered glass pane. Behind the vessel, a small potted basil plant rests on the sill, its green leaves against the muted tones of the room. The morning sun casts a long, sharp shadow of the thermos handle against the peeling white paint on the windowsill frame.
