Sprinter in Blocks Under Lagos Rain

Hard coastal glare slices through steady raindrops hanging in the air above a sprinter crouched low in starting blocks. The athlete's muscles tense against the wet, red clay of a hillside near Lekki, Lagos. Water beads heavily on the black rubber of the blocks and slicks the skin of the runner's shoulders. Cool season air leaves the surrounding grass short and dark green. The athlete's toes dig into the mud, creating small splashes around the metal pegs. Sweat mixes with the rain on the runner's back, glistening under the harsh midday sun that struggles to penetrate the gray sky. One droplet rolls down the curve of the athlete's shoulder blade.
