Spiral Staircase in Yogyakarta Atrium

by Brody Rivers

Deep indigo twilight fills the high vaulted atrium, against the amber glow of string lights draped along the stone balustrades. A spiral staircase descends in tight, concentric rings, its steps carved from local volcanic stone showing rough textures. Wooden railings curve inward, creating converging lines that pull toward the dark center of the void. Shadows pool heavily in the corners of the archway, softening the geometric precision of the architecture. The turn of the seasons is visible in the slight dusting of fallen leaves scattered across the upper landing. Warm light catches the uneven surface of the masonry, highlighting the depth of the spiral as it disappears into the lower levels. at the edge is a single leaf resting on the cool, shadowed edge of the lowest visible step.
