Snow Monkey Silhouette Before Sunrise Ridge

Steam rises in thick, white plumes from a natural hot spring nestled on a wind-scoured ridge near Sapporo. A Japanese macaque sits submerged in the steaming water, its dark fur turning to a charcoal silhouette against the pale horizon. The sky above is a perfect, clear expanse of deep indigo, unbroken by clouds. Low sunlight strikes the distant haze, painting the horizon line in soft gradients of violet and faint orange. Frost coats the surrounding volcanic rocks and sparse, snow-dusted vegetation. The animal remains motionless, its form stark against the glowing light. One wisp of steam curls upward from the water's surface, dissolving into the cold air.
