Slicing Limes in Marrakech

by Diego Holland

Sunlight strikes the dusty cobblestones of the Djemaa el-Fna square, casting long, sharp shadows from the surrounding ochre walls and the canopy of a nearby spice stall. In the mid-ground, a vendor in a white djellaba leans over a wooden cart, using a small fruit knife to slice through a pile of vibrant green limes, the blade catching a glint of hard afternoon light. Beside the cart, a striped towel is draped over the edge of a low table, frayed linen edges hanging loose. A few books rest near a ceramic trivet on the table, untouched and dusty. The background dissolves into a blur of moving figures and distant minarets, creating a deep sense of space.
