Majolica Plates in Marrakech

by Rebecca Clayton

Summer evening light washes over a narrow Djemaa el-Fna side street where a vendor balances a stack of glazed majolica plates on a wooden mallet used as a makeshift stand. The plates, painted in vibrant turquoise and cobalt, catch the fading sun, against the rough, sun-baked plaster of the surrounding wall. A hand broom leans against a nearby crate, its straw bristles dusted with red earth, while a pair of metal tongs rests on a woven mat, hinting at recent food preparation. In the background, the blurred motion of a passerby in a djellaba adds depth, their silhouette merging with the shadows of a nearby tea stall.
