Skater Spins on Staircase in Oslo Thaw

by Leo Nieves

Bright, flat noon light floods a narrow village lane near Oslo where early spring thaw leaves patches of slush and gray puddles. A figure skater spins rapidly on the ice, their body a blur of motion against the low-hanging clouds. The impossible element dominates the center: a wooden staircase rises from a landing while simultaneously descending into the same space, its steps defying gravity yet solid and distinct. The skater balances on the lower section of the stairs, blades biting into the ice that has formed directly on the wood. Diagonal lines from the banister and the skater's outstretched arm create sharp tension across the frame. Puddles reflect the pale sky and the impossible geometry. at the edge shows a single icicle hanging from the underside of the upper stair, melting into a perfect droplet.
