Shopkeeper in Brussels at Flat Noon Light
by Tessa Mejia
Under the flat, shadowless noon light of a Brussels café terrace, a shopkeeper in a faded blue apron leans over a Formica counter, his hand resting near a brass towel hook mounted on the wall. The surface is cluttered with the honest debris of service: a chipped white wash basin sits empty near the edge, reflecting the gray sky, while a wooden bottle caddy holds two dark glass bottles of local beer. A heavy cleaver lies next to a stack of napkins, its blade dull under the diffuse light. The green-painted wooden doorframe of the establishment, at the base of the moment in the specific, lived-in reality of a midday pause in the city center.
