Under the harsh sodium glare of a Mumbai streetlamp, a shopkeeper leans against the corrugated metal shutter of his closed hardware store, his face half-lit by the amber spill. In the foreground, a plastic folding chair sits askew on the cracked concrete pavement, holding a stack of dented tiffin tins that catch the reflection of passing headlights. A mesh colander rests upside down on the chair’s arm, filled with loose screws and nails that glint like scattered jewels.
