Sharpening Charcoal in Essaouira

A misty dawn diffuses the light over a weathered wooden counter in a Essaouira workshop, where the air hangs heavy with salt and cedar dust. A local artisan, his hands stained with walnut oil, carefully sharpens a charcoal stick against a rough stone, the fine black powder drifting onto the thin scratches of the work surface. Beside him, a row of paintbrushes with frayed bristles rests in a chipped ceramic jar, their handles scuffed by years of grip. In the background, the pale gray sky meets the flat horizon of the Atlantic, visible through an open doorway framed by blue-painted wood.
