Serving Stoneware in Bilbao

Early morning light spills across the wet basalt paving of Bilbao’s Gran Vía, catching the steam rising from a street-side café terrace where the city is just waking up. A waiter in a dark uniform maneuvers a heavy tray of speckled stoneware glaze cups and ceramic mugs toward a cluster of tables, his movement blurred by the quick pace of the service. To the left, ivy vines climb the textured facade of a historic building, their leaves damp with dew, while a rusted boot scraper sits neglected near the entrance of a closed shop, against the polished steel of a nearby bus stop shelter.
