Serving Food in Seoul
by Chase Nash
Mist rests on the narrow alleyway in Jongno as a street vendor tends to a steaming cart, the damp air softening the harsh edges of the surrounding concrete and brick. A young customer in a bright yellow raincoat stands waiting, holding a paper lantern that glows faintly against the gray dawn, its light reflecting in a puddle of rainwater near his sneakers. The vendor, wrapped in a thick wool scarf, uses a wooden ladle to serve hot tteokbokki from a large black skillet, steam rising in thick white plumes that mingle with the fog. A discarded plastic cup sits on the wet asphalt, stained with red chili sauce, while the vendor’s worn hands move with practiced efficiency.
