Adjusting Steamers in Seoul

by Leo Livingston

An overcast midday in Seoul, the damp concrete of a narrow alleyway glistens under flat, diffused light. A street vendor’s makeshift cart, cluttered with stainless steel steamers and bottles of gochujang, dominates the frame. A worker’s hands, rough and stained with soy sauce, deftly adjust a pair of tongs over a bubbling pot, steam rising in soft plumes. Beside the cart, a stack of white polystyrene bowls sits ready, their pearl-white rims catching the dull sky. A customer in a dark raincoat waits, holding a small plastic bag, while a faded red sign with Hangul characters hangs above, dripping slightly.
