Secondhand Books at Zwierzyniec Fruit Stand
by Douglas Rice
Bright early afternoon light floods the roadside stall in Zwierzyniec, Krakow, illuminating stacks of worn paperbacks arranged beneath a weathered canvas canopy. The scene blends the earthy tones of a fruit stand with the muted spines of secondhand literature, creating a dense, textured tableau. Water droplets rest on the rough surfaces of nearby crates and glisten on the glossy covers of books, evidence of recent rain. The humid air hangs heavy over the colorful produce displayed alongside the reading material. Stacks rise unevenly, some leaning precariously against sacks of onions or crates of apples, their edges frayed and soft. A shadow from the canopy edge falls across the lower row of books, creating a sharp contrast against the sunlit pages above. at the edge is one drop of water sliding slowly down the spine of a blue hardcover, leaving a dark trail on the dust.
