Preparing Tea in Beirut

The low morning sun cuts across the limestone façade of a traditional Beirut souk, illuminating a narrow passageway where a vendor adjusts the brass lid of a large copper pot steaming with breakfast tea. Beside the heavy metal lid, a chipped terracotta bowl holds fresh za'atar, its rough texture against the smooth, glazed ceramic of a nearby soap bottle left open on a wooden crate. One diamond ring glints on the finger of a young boy watching the steam rise, his hand resting near a padlock securing a shuttered metal gate below.
