Sea Shells on Driftwood in Barcelona Light
by Bill Roach
Sunlight streams through sheer curtains, illuminating dust motes that hang suspended in the air above a weathered piece of driftwood. The wood rests on a rough stone ledge, its surface carved by salt and time. A cluster of sea shells, ranging from pale cream to deep ochre, lies scattered across the gnarled timber. Their surfaces gleam with a subtle sheen where the late afternoon sun strikes them directly. The light creates sharp contrasts between the bright highlights on the shells and the deep shadows tucked within the wood's crevices. Negative space surrounds the arrangement, showing the stillness of the stone and the quiet accumulation of natural debris. A fine grain of sand catches the edge of a shell, marking the boundary between the sea and the interior room.
