Scattered Cinema Letters in Guangzhou Lantern Shrine

Predawn darkness wraps the Shamian Island shrine while stark fluorescent tubes cast a clinical, cold glow over the stone floor. Red and gold paper lanterns hang in dense rows, their paper surfaces dim and muted against the electric light. Scattered across the wet pavement lie individual metal marquee letters from a defunct cinema, their chrome surfaces reflecting the harsh overhead bulbs. The letters are jumbled, some standing upright, others lying flat amidst the traditional shrine architecture. The turn of the season is visible in the bare branches of potted plants near the entrance and the crisp, clear air suggested by the sharp shadows. One brass bell rests beside a fallen 'C', its surface polished by touch.
