Sanitation Worker in Shanghai
by Millie Floyd
Bright late morning light floods a narrow Shanghai alleyway where a sanitation worker in a neon orange vest leans against a wall of weathered grey brick, resting a bundle of long-handled mops against his shoulder. Beside him, a small cluster of blue hydrangeas spills from a cracked terracotta pot left on a low concrete ledge, their vibrant petals catching the harsh sun. The scene is cluttered with the textures of daily life: a rusted metal gate, a stack of plastic crates, and the rough pavement underfoot. The worker’s posture is casual, one hand resting on the mop handle, while the flowers provide a sudden burst of organic softness against the industrial grit of the urban infrastructure.
