Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast midday, a narrow alleyway in Shanghai pulses with domestic industry. A woman in a faded floral apron leans over a stainless steel basin, her hands submerged in soapy water while a cluster of wet mops leans heavily against the damp brick wall nearby, their bristles dripping onto the grey concrete. The scene is cluttered with the evidence of daily labor: a red plastic stool sits overturned, and a wooden ladder-back chair is wedged into the corner, supporting a stack of woven bamboo steamers. In the background, the green fronds of iris blossoms spill over a low retaining wall, softening the hard edges of the utilitarian space.
