Sanitation Worker in Kaohsiung
by Rachel Vance
Damp concrete reflects the cool, diffuse light of an early morning in Kaohsiung’s Yancheng District, where a sanitation worker in a high-visibility vest leans against a weathered utility pole. The worker grips a long-handled dust mop, its bristles splayed slightly from overnight use, resting against a stack of bright orange traffic cones that punctuate the gray pavement. Behind them, the glass facade of a modern bank mirrors the muted sky and the curved roofline of a nearby temple, blending colonial architecture with contemporary commerce. One, crumpled orange peel lies discarded near a storm drain, its vibrant color clashing with the wet, gritty texture of the street.
