Samarra Minaret Inside Cairo Chapel Skylight in in a chapel lit by stained glass in Cairo

Samarra Minaret Inside Cairo Chapel Skylight

by Catherine May

Pale stone rises in a tight spiral against walls washed in soft, diffused light from a high window. The structure mimics the iconic Samarra style, its brickwork textured and weathered, yet it sits within a Cairo chapel where stained glass fragments cast geometric patches of deep blue and amber across the floor. Late morning sun bounces off the pale surfaces, creating broad, gentle highlights that trace the curve of the spiral. Polished stone steps reflect the colored light, adding sharp, cool edges to the warm glow. Dust motes float in the shafts of light, showing the stillness of the space. One shadow stretches long across the floor, anchoring the spiral to the ground.
