Saffron and Cobalt on Tiled Stairs in inside a tiled stair hall near Montreal

Saffron and Cobalt on Tiled Stairs

by Joanne Chang

Golden honey light spills across worn ceramic tiles, illuminating a small pile of bright orange saffron powder resting on folded cobalt blue fabric. A crinkled sheet of silver foil lies nearby, catching the low-angle sun with sharp, scattered highlights. The muted reflections stretch across the grout lines, softening the rigid geometry of the stair hall. Early autumn air seems to settle in the cool gray stone surrounding the vivid colors. Negative space dominates the upper stairs, framing the arrangement without clutter. The saffron grains rest on the fabric folds, creating a textured boundary between the yellow-orange spice and the deep blue cloth. A faint shadow falls from the foil edge onto the tile, anchoring the objects in the physical space.
