Roller Derby Jammer Sweeping Past Harbin Reeds
A lone roller derby jammer in a star-spangled helmet and protective gear surges through the tall, dry reeds of a Harbin wetland at night. Beams of white light sweep across the dark water, illuminating the skater's motion blur against the rigid vertical stalks. The late summer heat creates a shimmering haze that distorts the reed tips and softens the distant shoreline. The skater's wheels kick up a fine mist of water and dried plant debris, catching the intermittent light. Shadows stretch long and thin across the muddy ground, while the rhythmic sweep of the light reveals the texture of the reed stalks and the worn plastic of the skater's pads. The final beam cuts across the skater's trailing leg guard, highlighting a scuff mark on the grey plastic.
