Repairing Basketball in Cairo

Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast midday, a narrow Cairo alleyway reveals a street vendor’s makeshift repair station. A young boy sits on a low plastic stool, his hands busy with a frayed leather basketball that has seen too many rough concrete courts. Beside him, a weathered wooden shelf holds a collection of tools and spare parts, including a rusted storage tin and a pair of nicked shears. Twine fibers spill from an open spool, tangled near a rolling pin used as a weight for a stack of invoices.
