Reception Desk Under Riverfront Mural in Winter Dusk
by Betty Franco
Rich amber sunset light floods the interior, illuminating a polished wooden reception desk against a wall dominated by a large mural depicting the Nagoya riverfront. Condensation beads across the glass surface of the desk, evidence of the humid, post-rain air clinging to the winter chill outside. Behind the counter, a person in a dark uniform stands facing away, their shoulder visible in the foreground, creating an over-the-shoulder perspective that directs the gaze toward the mural. Outside the heavy glass windows, orange barricades line the street, marking the protest routes. The mural’s painted water reflects the warm indoor glow, while the cold blue tones of the winter sky seep through the glass, against the copper-toned interior. A stack of official papers rests neatly on the desk, their edges sharp against the smooth wood grain.
