Rain-Slicked Curitiba Newsstand Night Reflections

by Bernadette LeBlanc

Amber streetlights stretch across wet asphalt, turning the pavement into a liquid mirror beneath a corner newsstand outside a metro entrance. The early autumn drizzle coats the glass shelves in a fine, glistening film that softens the edges of stacked newspapers and magazines. Dark, heavy clouds hang low, swallowing the sky above the metal frame of the stall. Water beads on the corrugated roof and runs down the side panels, merging with the slick ground below. One red magazine cover reflects sharply in a puddle near the base of the stand, its bright hue cutting through the surrounding gray and gold tones. The wet surface amplifies the glow of the overhead lamp, creating elongated streaks of light that dance across the scattered papers.
