Railroad Engineer in Hohhot Dawn Mist

by Mia Huff

Soft, gray morning light falls through a thin layer of fog, illuminating the weathered face of a railroad engineer leaning from the cab of a locomotive. His eyes are focused forward, framed by the dark, curved metal of the cab window. The engineer wears a heavy, dark uniform jacket with visible stitching and a cap pulled low against the cool air. Behind him, the blurred shapes of the locomotive's body and the distant, low-rise buildings of Hohhot's old quarter emerge faintly through the mist. The dry season air leaves the surfaces of the metal and fabric looking crisp and textured. A faint wisp of steam curls from the engine, dissolving instantly into the pale, diffused light of early sunrise. The tight framing isolates his expression against the industrial and urban backdrop.
