First light after rain falls through the dense canopy of a banyan tree, illuminating a wet concrete ledge in a Singaporean HDB void deck. A pair of weathered hands rests gently on a woven rattan mat, holding a steaming plastic bag of freshly purchased kaya toast and soft-boiled eggs. The morning mist rests on the distant pillars, blurring the boundary between the sheltered seating area and the open courtyard beyond. Water droplets bead on the green leaves overhead, catching the pale blue light of the early sky.
