A Seattle coffee shop window reflects the gray winter sky while inside, a barista in a thick wool sweater pours steaming milk into a ceramic mug, the steam rising in soft columns against the cold glass. On the counter, a worn copy of a local cookbook rests next to a stainless steel tea kettle, its spout still warm. A small bowl of fresh sage leaves sits beside a nail brush, perhaps left by a customer who just visited the nearby salon.
