Sunlight pours through the lattice windows of a traditional Kyoto machiya, illuminating a narrow corridor where daily life unfolds against dark wooden beams. A ceramic dog, glazed in vibrant turquoise and cobalt, sits perched on a low wooden shelf, its glossy surface catching the bright afternoon glare. Beside it, a stack of white porcelain plates rests on a woven rush mat, the rim of the top plate catching a sharp, pearlescent highlight. The floor is polished hinoki cypress, worn smooth by generations of feet, reflecting the scattered light. A small, faded doormat lies just outside the threshold, hinting at the street beyond.
