Porcelain Plate in George Town

Under the harsh, shadowless glare of flat noon light, a weathered shopkeeper in a faded singlet stands behind a low counter inside a narrow shophouse in George Town. His hands, stained with the dark residue of old tea leaves, carefully slide a chipped blue and white porcelain plate across the scarred wooden surface. Behind him, the deep, cool interior of the shop contrasts sharply with the bright, sun-bleached street visible through the open doorway. One droplet of condensation rests on the rim of the plate, catching the intense overhead light.
