Porcelain Jars in Hong Kong

by Tommy Mejia

Inside a cramped, steam-fogged kitchen in a Mong Kok tenement, a stainless steel workbench reflects the harsh glare of a bare fluorescent tube. A worn tea tray sits abandoned beside a stack of chipped porcelain jars, their surfaces slick with condensation. Thin scratches mar the metal, recording years of frantic prep work. Through the open service window, the deep blue twilight of the alley spills in, against the warm, artificial interior light. A pair of glass tumblers rests near the edge, one overturned, catching a glint of the streetlamp outside.
