Papua New Guinean Mumu Feast Display
Dark, rough-textured banana leaves wrap a mound of earth oven food, resting on a polished white plinth under the flat glare of noon. The leaves show deep green veins and slightly charred edges where the hot stones cooked the meal. Pale walls bounce soft, diffused light onto the glossy surfaces of the display case, creating gentle reflections that mirror the dark organic shapes. The stark contrast between the earthy browns of the cooked yams and the sterile white museum base emphasizes the raw, traditional preparation method. Early winter light casts a cool, neutral tone across the room, highlighting the texture of the woven leaf wrapping against the smooth, artificial environment of the Delft gallery. A faint shadow falls along the base of the plinth, at the base of the heavy mound in the space.
