Plaza Life in Cusco
by Ross Nava
Cool morning mist rests on the cobblestones of Cusco’s Plaza de Armas as a street vendor arranges pyramids of bright red quinoa and purple potatoes on a wooden crate, the steam from his metal teapot curling into the damp air. A weathered stone bench sits nearby, its surface scarred by decades of feet, while an orange cat perches atop a stack of woven baskets, watching the early commuters with indifferent curiosity. The vendor’s hands, stained with earth and tea, move quickly to pack a customer’s order, the vibrant textiles of his poncho contrasting sharply against the gray, wet stone of the colonial church facade looming in the background.
