Colorful Produce in Cusco
by Rachel Trejo
Under the flat, diffuse light of an overcast midday in Cusco, a street vendor stands behind a weathered wooden cart in the Plaza de Armas, arranging bright yellow chilies and purple potatoes on a metal tray. The vendor wears a traditional woven pollera skirt and a wide-brimmed hat, her hands moving with practiced efficiency as she sorts the produce. Behind her, the colonial architecture of the cathedral looms, its stone facade muted by the gray sky. A few pedestrians in modern clothing walk past, their movements blurred by the ambient activity. The vibrant local commerce, with the colorful vegetables providing a stark contrast to the muted tones of the stone and the overcast sky.
