Arranging Mangoes in Cusco

by Zara Scott

Under the flat, shadowless glare of noon, a Cusco street vendor leans against a sun-bleached adobe wall, arranging a pyramid of bright yellow mangoes on a rough wooden cutting board. The fruit’s smooth, waxy skins contrast sharply with the dusty, cracked earth of the cobblestone plaza. Behind him, a faded green awning casts a thin strip of shade over a cluster of glass bottles filled with chicha morada, their dark purple liquid glowing against the harsh daylight. A plastic shirt hanger dangles loosely from the awning’s rusted metal bracket, swaying slightly in the stagnant air. The vendor’s hands, stained with fruit juice, move with practiced efficiency, ignoring the camera as he sorts the produce for the midday rush.
